We’re planning to apply again as organisation for GSoC 2017. As last year we want to be an umbrella organisation for wireless communities. More information on GSoC you can find at Google Summer of Code - Wikipedia

Google announced the new program in October. The period to apply as organisation will start on January 19 and will close on February 9: Google Summer of Code 2022 Timeline  |  Google Developers

As every year we need your ideas for possible projects. These ideas are one of the most important parts of our application. They are also source for students to develop their project proposals. Please add your ideas to our wiki page at Ideas – wiki.freifunk.net Our ideas from last year I copied to Ideas GSoC 2016 – wiki.freifunk.net

Please spread this to your communities, so we can get a great collections of ideas! If you know of other wireless communities, please inform them, too.

Macht es Sinn sehr spezielle Projekte wie Gluon-Hardwarekompatibilität vorzuschlagen (Siehe ZSUN Wifi Card Reader (Kleinster Freifunk Router der Welt?))

ja, warum nicht?

Wichtig ist, dass das Projekt im freifunk/wireless community-Kontext angesiedelt ist und dass so ein Projekt in ca. 3 Monaten abgeschlossen werden kann. Schreib auch den Schwierigkeitsgrad dazu.

Wie wäre es, wenn man was zu l3roamd macht? Ich weiß nicht, ob @anon75826926 und @tcatm mitlesen, daher verlinke ich sie mal hier.

Nur so als Idee, ich weiß nicht, was ihr beide den Sommer über geplant habt. Könnte mir aber vorstellen, dass es interessant ist und gefördert wird.

denkt bitte daran, eure Ideen im Wiki so schnell wie möglich, spätestens bis zum Ende der Woche im Wiki einzutragen. Dann beginnt die Bewerbungsphase.

@PetaByteBoy Brauchst du nicht noch nen Codesklaven Helfer für das Hopglass-Refactoring, Library-Bumps und so? Über das Programm von Google gibt es sicher viele, die relativ gut Javascript und Web-Technologien beherrschen.

Das war ja nicht so ganz non-trivial. Hab jetzt aber das Development nicht mehr so verfolgt und weiß daher nicht ob ihr das nicht schon angefangen habt.

Wonach werden die Projekte eigentlich ausgewählt? Manchmal ist Klasse besser als Masse, bevor hier 30 Projekte eingereicht werden…

hier werden noch gar keine Projekte ausgewählt. Es geht hier darum, Ideen anzubieten, auf deren Basis dann Studenten Projekte entwickeln können.

Mit diesen Projekten bewerben sie sich dann bei uns und zusammen mit den potentiellen Mentoren bewerten wir das dann, Abhängig von der Anzahl der Projekte, die Google uns zugesteht müssen wir dann entscheiden.

Für eine erfolgreiche Bewerbung benötigen wir allerdings auch eine ausreichende Anzahl an Ideen :smile:

Inhaltlich kann man gar nicht sagen, was Aussicht auf Erfolg hat. Es muss halt mit Wireless Communities zu tun haben, es muss für einen Studenten in 3 Monaten umsetzbar sein.

Dann kommt es ganz stark auf die Studenten an, die sich dann mit einem konkreten Proposal bewerben.

Hi there,

today Google announced the organizations they choosed for GSoC 2017. I’m happy to tell you: Freifunk is again accepted as mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code together with 200 other OpenSource organizations! Our friends from OpenWISP.org got accepted, too! Thanks to all who helped making this application successful: those who collected all the ideas (this year we have really a lot of ideas!), those who talked to possible mentors and those who wrote the application texts.

From now on students can find us on the GSoC Website, and we should start talking to students that want to propose projects to freifunk. If you know students, point them to our Ideas page at Ideas – wiki.freifunk.net so they can get in touch with our mentors.

The official Students Application period will start on March, 20. Then students can start submitting their applications.

As a next step we’ll add the possible mentors to a mailing list.

If you have any questions regarding GSoC, our ideas or as organization, please don’t hesitate to ask!
