Freifunk Brilon is back – rebuilding and new responsibility

I also want to conclude the topic with an »external fact-check¹«.

Where VonderWulf Actually Accepts Criticism

His clearest acknowledgments come relatively late. Three points are particularly clear.

First, he acknowledges the communication around Brilon as a mistake. In post 32, he writes that the decision regarding domain and infrastructure was not communicated clearly and early enough; in post 34, he repeats that the shutdown, or rather the transition, was not explained in time.

Second, he acknowledges a concrete organizational error in domain handling. After wusel explains that handing over to a successor would have been more logical than returning/canceling, VonderWulf responds that he had assumed a different process and should have clarified beforehand whether anyone wanted to take over the domain and mail address.

Third, there is a very clear admission regarding Meschede: No prior concrete approval, no binding technical support, original wording too broad and misleading. He repeats the same in the account deletion thread.

Where His Counteraccusations Don’t Hold Up After the Thread

The clearest case is his repeated claim that the other side portrays it as if he had built up and subsequently abandoned a „large,“ „extensive,“ or established community. This is precisely not the accusation in wusel’s substantive criticism. Wusel explicitly contradicts this portrayal and formulates the actual accusation: VonderWulf presented himself publicly as a new point of contact and took on responsibility for a rebuild, but then ended the website and contact options after less than three weeks.

This matters because VonderWulf repeatedly directs his defense toward the size of the community: there were only about 15 emails, no viable structure, little response, etc. These facts may be true, but they only partially address the actual point of criticism. The criticism is not primarily „You destroyed a large community,“ but rather: „You publicly took on responsibility for a fresh start and then ended the newly created structures very hastily and without a regulated transition.“ To that extent, VonderWulf is arguing against a stronger claim that the main critic never actually made.

Similarly, his formulation that he is accused of shutting down the website and contact address „secretly“ misses the mark. The central accusation from wusel is rather „quietly and radically,“ or lack of coordination. Later, VonderWulf himself admits that the communication was not clear and early enough. His defense against the accusation of a „secret“ action thus once again shifts the wording of the actual accusation.

Also problematic is his interim portrayal in the account deletion thread, to the effect that 4830.org ended support, which is why he couldn’t continue the project and he himself didn’t end the collaboration. For Meschede, his own later admission shows precisely that binding collaboration or support had not yet been agreed upon. For Brilon, the task had already been completed before the public distancing from Meschede activities was expressed. As a blanket blame directed at 4830.org, this portrayal therefore does not accurately reflect the chronology.

Where, Conversely, Criticism of VonderWulf Goes Beyond What Can Be Proven

Conversely, not all statements by his critics are verifiable as factual claims. Statements like „ego moves,“ that he damaged the image of Freifunk, that he is an „impatient activist sprinter,“ that Freifunk may be the wrong hobby, or that his approach is „unforgivable,“ are value judgments. It is understandable that VonderWulf criticizes these personal escalations as unnecessary or no longer factual. wusel does indeed use corresponding personal characterizations; jenell95 speaks of „ego moves.“

Nor is conscious sabotage of the domain or intentional damage to a successor established from the threads. What is established is poor or uncoordinated handover; VonderWulf, conversely, explains that he misunderstood the registrar process and intended no blockade. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, one should therefore speak of an organizational error, not of intent.

The Two Supplementary Threads

The account deletion thread is particularly relevant in content because VonderWulf initially still denies responsibility and argues, to the effect that without a technical partner he cannot continue the project. After wusel’s clarification, however, he explicitly corrects his portrayal and confirms the lack of approval from 4830.org for Meschede. Thus, this thread essentially contains the clearest admission of the entire conflict.

The post 5 you linked in Murxmaster’s Meschede thread responds to the question about accessibility with the note that it works „for small monetary contributions,“ supplemented by a screenshot. From the version readable in text form by the forum, the technical condition of the offer shown there cannot be reliably determined in more detail; I therefore would not infer from this more than that there too the very short-term availability or domain situation had become the subject of criticism.

In one sentence: The strongest accusations against VonderWulf are not that he „destroyed“ a large existing community, but that he publicly announced a sustainable rebuild and took on responsibility, then ended essential structures very hastily and without a regulated transition, and in Meschede presented technical cooperation as more firmly agreed than it actually was. He himself largely acknowledges these points later. Conversely, not tenable or at least not supported by the thread are his repeated counterarguments that critics had attributed to him the building up and destruction of a large community or a corresponding portrayal; likewise, on the critics’ side, unsubstantiated motives like intent, ego, or conscious sabotage should not be treated as facts.
